Jack Kruger

Jack Kruger is a digital strategist and usability specialist, and has spent the past 13 years launching several start-up ventures and managing digital businesses within multinational corporates. During this time he has provided web and mobile solutions to a diverse mix of brands across several industries, including: Anglo, Volkswagen, Audi, Telkom, Old Mutual, Nedcor, IBM, British American Tobacco, SAB, etc.

Jack is currently the head of digital at Old Mutual, and was previously a director and the executive producer at Ogilvy Interactive.  At Old Mutual he has been responsible for the interface design and development of FundsNet, a pioneering mutual fund supermarket, and the design and management of the Fairbairn Capital online business. His current focus is on developing and directing Old Mutual’s external digital strategy and businesses.

Jack is further the owner of Latitude Experience Design (LXD), a usability and digital strategy company. LXD provides consulting services to advertising agencies, and further delivers digital solutions to clients in the tourism and wine industries – predominantly in the South African and European markets.

Jack is a passionate usability and experience design advocate and maintains a keen interest in digital developments within emerging markets.

Karin Veltman

Karin thrives on challenge, great ideas and inspiring people. After graduation the lawyer in Karin was quickly set aside to become a democracy activist managing a capacity building programme for politicians in 8 countries in the former Soviet States. Campaign and media training were high on the agenda.

She subsequently moved to Brussels to be the political adviser for the EU Integrated Rule of Law Mission for Iraq, liaising with international institutions and senior government officials from Iraq and the European Member States on issues of rule of law and security sector reform. Flying helicopters over Baghdad and driving with designated bodyguards in armored vehicles was part of this surreal job.

Since early 2009 Karin is co-establisher and managing partner of BKB Africa Campaigning in Cape Town. Together with her three inspiring partners in crime she seeks to contribute to society in South(ern) Africa by conceptualizing and implementing campaigns and communication strategies related to social causes.

Karin loves South Africa, underwater hockey and surfing.


Dave Duarte


Dave Duarte is an independent and pioneering internet and mobile marketing specialist, and holds several senior positions in the academic, commercial, and non-profit sectors.

He is founder and programme director of two Executive Education courses: Nomadic Marketing and Mobile Marketing at the University of Cape Town (UCT) Graduate School of Business. He also lectures on the Executive MBA programme at UCT GSB.

He is MD and Partner at Huddlemind Labs. The company consults to numerous multinational corporations to provide education and research as well as collaborative online learning platforms.

Dave’s non-profit appointments include:

  • Dean of the Digital Media Faculty at The Maharishi Institute of Management (a free  university founded by Taddy Blecher, and endorsed by international icons such as Bill Clinton, Oprah Winfrey, Richard Branson and the Dalai Lama)
  • He is Public Lead for Creative Commons (CC) South Africa (CC is a non-profit that offers a set of free customizable digital licenses that have been applied more than 200 million times globally)

His other projects include: Co-founder of the 27dinner (a free monthly event that runs nationally on the 27th of every month) and Co-owner of Muti.co.za (Africa’s most popular online social bookmarking application)

Dave won the “Best Business Blog” category at the 2009 SA Blog Awards. He was runner up for Innovator of the Year in the 2007 African ICT Achiever Awards.

He is rated as one of the Top 100 Most Influential Media and Advertising people in South Africa by Jeremy Maggs in “The Annual“.

Dorette Steenkamp


Dorette is the Co-Founder and Executive Director of a non-profit company in South Africa, called Uthango Social Investments. Uthango specialises in community engagement and sustainable local economic development solutions. The company is also on the forefront of using innovative technologies in Africa to eradicate poverty and address digital equity. Her role in Uthango includes international advocacy, fundraising, research and development and partnerships.

Dorette has been elected as Ambassador for the Virtual Worlds Association for Africa and will represent Uthango’s initiative as best practice case study at the United Nations Conference on Internet Governance in Egypt in November 2009. Her passion for promoting access to information, combined with a keen interest in research in the arena of international development, makes for an interesting and challenging mix of analytical skills and humanitarian insight. Her experience is diverse across more than one academic discipline, and includes one-on-one interaction with communities as well as integrated use of social media for public benefit and advocacy.
